I CAN clearly remember the Christmas Eve when, as a child, our family had dropped in on my uncle and his family.

Being the larrikin he is, my uncle made sure he hyped up all of us kids about Santa and Christmas and the presents that would be arriving that night.

Sure enough, we were all pumped when we were put to bed that night, I managed to stay there until 12.15am, when I went in to Mum and Dad to see if we could get up yet and open presents.

I tell you, that was a long night. By the time we were finally allowed to get up, I was exhausted, and after the high expectations it was pretty hard for the day to live up to it.

All in all, a bit of a humbling experience.

And Christmas can be a bit like that. Humbling.

As a kid, when you don't get the present you want.

As an adult, when all the effort of present buying and travelling and food preparation, is met with undesired responses. …
