MY wife and I were touring Australia and had landed at 80 Mile Beach in northern Western Australia.

The reverie was disturbed by a motor bike going around the caravan park at a very sedate pace.

It would then stop, rev up madly and go around again.

This scenario was compounded by the fact that the driver had his left leg encased in plaster.

This carried on for about 30 minutes and stopped, only to begin again next morning.

This format was very intriguing and prompted me to call on the chap on the bike at his camp to find out the reason.

The answer was that there were two chaps on bikes travelling from Darwin to Perth and one had had a fall and broken his ankle.

He'd had the break repaired and plastered in Broome and they were attempting to get back to Perth.

The plastered leg meant he could not change gear, being a foot change, so they were trying to work out the best gear to start the bike and proceed all the way to Perth in the one gear. …
