MY husband and I (now in our 70s) are originally from Newcastle but have been living elsewhere for the past 30 years. We came up to Newcastle for a few days to visit friends and family. On Saturday December 12 we were on our way to QE Hospital, Gateshead, to visit a family member, and when the snow turned into blizzard and we had a horrendous journey there.

On leaving the hospital the weather was slightly improved, but the car did not feel quite right, so pulled off the A184 to check and discovered that we had a flat tyre.

As my husband is no longer well enough to change a wheel, we called the AA who advised that it would be anything between two and four hours before they could get anyone out, as the weather conditions were so bad.

We resigned ourselves to having to wait, and after a short while a car pulled up alongside us, and asked if we were OK. …
