BORO will be top of the Championship table on Christmas Day, but Aitor Karanka won't be getting carried away.

In fact, the head coach is simply relieved that the club are safe from relegation!

He may have been speaking with tongue firmly in cheek, but he is refusing to indulge in the hype surrounding his team's impressive promotion bid.

Saturday's ruthless 3-0 win at Brighton means Boro are two points clear of second-placed Derby and three clear of former leaders Albion, who are now third.

"With 46 points we can say we'll be in the Championship next season," said Karanka, when asked what it meant to be top for Christmas.

"It's not our aim. Our aim is to get promotion. But we have to know how difficult it has been to take that position - we can't now forget that.

"So we have to keep going in the same way because we have Brighton, we have Hull, we have Derby, we have a lot of team behind us which want the same position as us. …
