Police Arrest 70 Burglars in Christmas Clampdown

A POLICE operation to "Beat the Burglar" has seen more than 70 arrests in the run up to Christmas.

The month-long campaign in Newcastle and Gateshead last saw 73 arrested and 27 charged with burglary offences.

Officers ran coordinated arrest operations, carried out search warrants at known offenders' addresses and held a number of crime prevention events and advice sessions across both Newcastle and Gateshead.

In total 48 people were arrested in Newcastle and 25 people in Gateshead on suspicion of burglary offences.

Although the month of activity has come to an end officers have said they will continue to keep the pressure on burglars in the run up to Christmas and into 2016.

Central Area Command Chief Inspector Steve Ammari said: "November saw a big push from officers across Central Area Command around burglary and we saw some excellent work being done both in Newcastle and Gateshead.

"We were able to cause some real disruption to known burglars, make some really positive arrests and seize back a lot of suspected stolen property - which we will be looking to get back to the rightful owners. …
