Councillor Expenses to Be Reviewed

A REVIEW into expenses of Tweed Shire councillors will be completed and presented to councillors on January 21.

The independent review was commissioned by general manager Troy Green after Mayor Katie Milne queried telephone expenses of councillors Warren Polglase and Carolyn Byrne. A $9.95 claim by Cr Barry Longland for an aviation magazine was also questioned by the mayor at the December 10 council meeting.

Cr Milne said her main concern was Crs Byrne and Polglase had been claiming telephone and internet expenses without providing the proper paperwork.

"They had only provided an invoice from their businesses with simple totals, rather than the accounts from the original providers," she said.

"They had consistently claimed the maximum amounts allowable of $220 for telephone and $99 for internet. The policy clearly states that proper documentation is to be provided, no general expense allowances are to be paid, and claims must be strictly related to our civic duties only. …
