Article excerpt

A 63-year-old grandfather was shot and killed in the doorway of his house late Tuesday after answering a knock at the door, Jacksonville police said.

Augusto Collado was home with his wife and 25-year-old grandson in the 2300 block of Labelle Street when the attackers knocked, then shot when the man opened the door just before 11 p.m.

Collado died after he was taken to UF Health Jacksonville.

Police described the suspects as a white man with a shaved head and a black man. Both were described as in their 20s, police said.

No other details were released.

Collado's wife, 64, also was seen being taken away by ambulance a couple of hours later after having a medical issue.

Police are investigating a body that was found Wednesday afternoon in the backyard of an abandoned house in a Jacksonville neighborhood just south of the Trout River.

A neighbor noticed the body behind the house in the 5000 block of Portsmouth Avenue and alerted authorities about 5:20 p.m., Sgt. Chuck Ford said.

He said the victim was a male and it looks like foul play was involved.

It's unclear how long the body was in the yard or how long the house has been unoccupied, Ford said.

He said he couldn't go into detail about why foul play is suspected.

The Sheriff's Office dive team recovered a body from a Lakewood retention pond Wednesday afternoon in Jacksonville, but the man's identity and how long he was in the water are unclear.

Foul play is not suspected, Sgt. Chuck Ford said. He said it's too early to know what happened to the man and investigators will go through missing-person reports to determine if there could be a match.

Someone eating lunch spotted the body about noon in the 3500 block of University Boulevard West behind a stretch of businesses near St. Augustine Road.
