Road Toll Climbs with Two Fatalities

THE school holiday and Christmas period continues to claim the lives of drivers across the state with two lives lost from our region this week.

So far this year, 238 people have died in traffic crashes in Queensland, 17 more than this time last year.

Queensland's first holiday road fatality happened about 12.45pm on December 23, about 20km north of Gin Gin.

Highfields resident, Edward Mark Young, 53, died and two others were taken to hospital after a two-car crash on the Bruce Hwy about 20km north of Gin Gin on Wednesday.

Gin Gin police Sergeant Tim Marrinan said the accident happened about 12.45pm after one of the vehicles ended up on the wrong side of the road, resulting in a head-on collision.

The second happened on Thursday about 8.30am in Oakey when a 4WD crossed into the lane of an oncoming bus with 18 passengers on-board.

Celeste Honey said the driver of the vehicle who died, a Brisbane man, was one of her best friends. …
