WHEN I was in my 20s, having a dinner party was something I thought was the height of sophistication. I couldn't wait till I could have my own proper dining table to decorate with beautiful things for my guests to wow over.

In my head it was always white crockery with silver around the edges, a crisp white tablecloth and a beautiful runner laid perfectly down the middle.

At Christmas it would have white sparkly sticks poking out from a huge vase, with mistletoe and eucalyptus leaves wrapped round the base.

Every place setting would have a specially chosen bauble with my guests' names on them, perched on beautifully folded white napkins, coiled in elegant napkin rings.

There would be candelabras with flickering candles, and wine in beautiful glasses. And the finishing touch would be a cook who would make something edible enough to justify all this finery.

Many years later, I have managed to make my table dreams come true for Christmas and New Year all except for the food, which is still the stuff of nightmares...
