MY wife Carole and I were married in StPatrick's Catholic Church in Gympie on December 28, 1985.

My wife's mother Iris had been widowed and had met a widowed Australian farmer, Bernie Reeves, who was holidaying in England - he proposed to her after three days!

Iris duly married Bernie and moved to Imbil.

So when Carole and I decided to get married, we thought that it would be a lovely idea to get married from Carole's mother's house.

Sadly, Bernie and Iris have now died, but to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary this year, Carole and I decided to travel to Australia to revisit Gympie and Imbil.

At the time of our wedding, I was a captain in the British Army's Royal Army Ordnance Corps. After 34 years of service, I retired as a colonel.

Carole was a teacher and I met her in Germany in 1983, when she was teaching service children in Germany.

After Carole and I were married, we had various military postings in the UK, and even the Falkland Islands for two years. …
