United Need Plenty of New Year Resolution!

WELCOME, oh welcome, 2016. May you be kinder to Geordie folk than your predecessor.

Good riddance to 12 months which produced a meagre seven Premier League victories each dotted like an oasis in a barren desert.

All right, a visit to Arsenal, oneeyed in their pursuit of the title, is hardly ideal when searching for an away victory but a smile from Lady Luck would be most appreciated.

We have lived under the threat of relegation for so long even the memory of being a boring midtable side seems many moons ago.

The latest bitter defeat last Monday came after United lost their biggest star performer Rob Elliot to illness during the warmup resulting in a debutant keeper Karl Darlow seeing the winner squirm beneath his body.

Deary me, it was like watching another third-choice goalkeeper Jak Alnwick twitch his way through United's miserable Christmas last season.

The manner of the defeat in the Midlands has plunged long suffering fans into a deep depression and Steve McClaren does not help himself when stating that United must keep their consistency to haul themselves out of trouble. Consistency? The only thing consistent has been the torrent of defeats!

The reality in this - the harshest of environments - is United's fortunes will only change if they help themselves.

Lady Luck can give them a nudge for sure but it takes decisive action to change the relentless course of a river which means recruiting during this critical month. That is a must, not an option.

While we wait in hope rather than expectation points are precious and cannot be lightly tossed away. The main problem is obvious. Newcastle have scored only five away goals all season, which is hardly reassuring as they are in the middle of three back-to-back matches on their travels. …
