Charity Hits out over 'Bleak Choice' Facing North Families

IT is 'unacceptable' people in the 'so-called Northern Powerhouse' have to choose between food or a roof over their head, Labour's shadow housing minister has said.

New figures from Shelter show that 1.8 million people across the North will struggle to heat their home and pay their rent or mortgage this month.

The research by YouGov and Shelter found that one in nine rent or mortgage payers fear they will miss their payments this month.

Labour's MP for the City of Durham, Roberta Blackman-Woods, said the figures were a reminder of the government's failure to tackle the housing crisis.

She said: "Home ownership is now at its lowest level for a generation, and with a lack of supply comes a huge surge in prices.

"It is unacceptable that people in the North are now facing a choice between food or a roof over their head, and with little help from the Government."

The shadow housing minister added: "Sadly, it comes as no surprise that people can no longer afford their rent or mortgage payments. …
