1972 BRITISH coal miners began a national strike, the first for half a century. The action followed a row over pay and the strike lasted until February 28.

It is estimated the strike action cost the industry PS20m. The miners were looking for an increase of up to PS9 a week on the average wage.

LED Zeppelin's Jimmy Page was born. The musician, 72, from Middlesex is hailed as one of rock's greatest guitarists and songs like Whole Lotta Love and Stairway To Heaven are classics. Jimmy said: "Every musician wants to do something which will hold up for a long time, and I guess we did it with Stairway To Heaven."
