STEAL MAGNOLIAS: We're off to a flying start to the new year. Over the holidays, my main self-indulgence was to sit down with catalogues and books and compose a "wants" list.

During December, in an attempt to rejuvenate our shady garden, there has been lots of cutting back and taking out of trees and shrubs.

In the centre it would be lovely to plant two magnolias.

My friend Veronica has a wonderful collection in her garden in Herefordshire and two varieties I saw there grabbed my attention - although they are all lovely.

Magnolia 'Daybreak' has pink flowers but the pink is quite different from most magnolias. It is a soft coral colour and blooms have a heady fragrance.

Since it grows into a fairly narrow, upright tree it is ideal for the limited space we've got.

Close by, we're going to put in a Magnolia 'Daphne', with pale yellow flowers and elegant petals.

GROUND WORK: The two will complement each other and their accompaniment at ground level, white narcissi, epimediums galore, snowdrops and Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' should be subtle but alluring. …
