THE hidden saints of Newcastle city centre will be revealed as experts tell their stories in a special public event.

The Saints in Glass event at St Nicholas Cathedral tomorrow will highlight the Virgin Mary, St Cuthbert, St Margaret, St George, and St Oswald.

All are portrayed on the cathedral's Victorian stained glass windows, some of which are believed to be close copies of the medieval originals.

Organiser Dr Lesley Twomey, director of visual cultures at Northumbria University, decided to stage the event after taking part in a medieval walk around Newcastle as part of the recent Being Human festival.

"Some people on the walk had no idea what it was like inside the cathedral," she said.

"But there are a lot of stories to tell about the cathedral and its heritage.

"The windows are very vibrant and special. But the stories behind the windows have been largely forgotten these days than in the past, when people attended church much more frequently.

"I hope the event will generate interest in the culture we have in the heart of the city and what a wonderful building the cathedral is."

Dr Twomey will be giving one of the short talks on the Virgin Mary, who was the subject of her PhD.

She has spent 30 years studying how the Virgin Mary has been represented in art and literature across different cultures and time.

The programme for the day, from 10am-4pm (cost PS6 and PS5) includes: 10.15am: St Margaret, by Prof Andy Beresford, of Durham University.

10.45am: St Mary the Virgin, Dr Twomey.
