'Vital Rail Line Must Be Reopened as Soon as Possible'

MORE should be done to reopen the Tyne Valley railway line, a leading North East politician has said.

The line linking Newcastle to Carlisle is vital for many communities in Northumberland, but services are frequently disrupted.

A landslip following bad weather saw 140 tonnes of soil block the line from Tuesday January 5 to Thursday January 7. And the line closed was forced to close as soon as it was reopened following a second landslip. Now the line between Hexham and Prudhoe is expected to be closed again.

Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council and the North East Combined Authority's lead member for transport has written to Network Rail and Northern Rail criticising the length of the closure and urging the firms to do all they can to hasten the line's reopening. In a letter to Mark Tarry, Network Rail's route managing director, Coun Forbes said: "The Tyne Valley line is a crucial piece of our region's infrastructure, both for freight and passenger services. …
