Article excerpt

NORTHUMBRIA University are breaking new ground by giving back to the local community in the form of the only universityled Street Games programme in the country.

Launched in 2007, Street Games now helps more than 600 community organisations - including the scheme put in place by Northumbria - in a bid to take sport to the doorstep of disadvantaged communities.

Northumbria's Sport Foundation raises money to fund the one-of-a-kind project in Newcastle which is completely led by student volunteers.

Development Officer and Northumbria Sport Foundation fundraiser Josephine Pointon said: "We ought to be proud of the fact we are the only university in the whole of the UK to be running a Street Games programme.

"Our aims are to have a positive and sustainable impact on our local community through sport."

Solely organised and led by Northumbria students, the Street Games programme currently offers three weekly projects for participants. The first of these is a femaleonly boxing session, delivered in partnership with Nunsmoor Centre Trust and charity Ethnic Minorities Training and Projects (EMTEP) and led by volunteer Becky Oldroyd at the Nunsmoor Centre.

The sessions have been put in place to increase self-esteem and self-confidence while simultaneously teaching self-defence. Olroyd said: "One of my roles is to deliver boxing lessons to disadvantaged women every Sunday morning.

"These women would otherwise have difficulties accessing sporting opportunities due to their religion.

"However, thanks to Street Games, we have created a suitable, fun and enjoyable environment where women can be themselves and come together as a community."

The student volunteers also deliver structured sport at the Space2 youth centre in central Newcastle in a bid to increase participation for children.

Oldroyd is fundamental in delivering the Space2 sessions and explained how the Street Games is about more than just doing sport. …
