Cash Heads North to Take Up Dream Gig

FOOTBALL: Darryl Cash has put his teaching career on hold to focus on football.

Cash is the Mackay Crusaders Football Club's and Mackay Regional Football Zone's new technical director.

"I'm a little bit nervous but excited at the same time," Cash said.

"I've always been looking for an avenue to get into coaching full time, and this one just came at the right time for me, so I jumped on board."

Cash is the incumbent coach of the Queensland Country under-13 boys team, a position he said would help with the new job.

"It's helped me make those connections, I'm familiar with the people around the Queensland country area and I'm familiar with some of the players, so I'm not going up there completely blind," he said.

The Gympie coach said the pathways for juniors playing football were now very clear.

"It's still possible to make it as an adult but it's harder because you're not identified early and you're don't get given the same opportunities as when you're younger," Cash said. …
