Townsend Is Raring to Go for Magpies; McClaren Delighted to Sign Townsend

ANDROS Townsend cannot wait to start playing for Newcastle United - because he knows scoring goals and providing assists in the famous black-and-white shirt can only help him fulfil his dream of representing England at Euro 2016.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-and-a-halfyear contract at St James' Park after the Magpies paid an initial PS12m to bring the winger to the North East from Tottenham.

United are the Premier League's top spenders so far this window, having lavished just shy of PS30m on three new faces, and now they have secured Townsend's signature they will look to finally bring in a striker before Monday's 11pm deadline.

Townsend, though, is delighted to have eventually finalised his long, drawn-out move to Tyneside.

Should he shine for United and help steer the Magpies clear of the relegation zone, the winger knows he will add to his 10 international caps.

He said: "To be honest, I'm not thinking about England at all.

"I know if I am playing well for Newcastle - playing well, scoring and creating assists - helping Newcastle get three points and climb up the table - then the England accolades will come with that.

"First and foremost I'm just focusing on getting back to playing football and getting back to showing people what I can do."

With the Magpies already having signed fellow Three Lions international Jonjo Shelvey this month, and Jack Colback also on the club's books, Townsend knows England boss Roy Turn to Page 54 FROM BACK PAGE Hodgson will keep a close eye on events at St James' Park before the season is out.

The Magpies trio can help one another to impress and secure their respective places on the flight to France in June.
