'Mayhem' on Trains as 14 Drivers Go Sick

PASSENGERS today told of "mayhem" on overcrowded trains as a string of late-night services were cancelled when 14 drivers fell ill.

Up to a dozen trains departing from Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street stations last night were cancelled, with others delayed or operating with a reduced number of carriages.

Travellers were forced to cram into other trains in a desperate bid to get home. Conditions on the C2C trains were so cramped that one horrified passenger claimed two men unable to reach the toilets wet themselves in their seats. Hannah Fisher, 35, caught the 10.49pm from Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness, which had four carriages instead of eight.

She said: "When I managed to board it was mayhem. One man by the doors was trying to get through the crush but kept being pushed back, people couldn't move to let him through. In the end he just couldn't hold it.
