A 12-YEAR-OLD boy discovered a ute that had human remains in it while water skiing at the weekend.

The Holden Colorado was hauled out of Lake Awoonga on Saturday and is registered to Kurt Kempton, a Boyne Valley man who went missing 16 months ago.

Gladstone Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said there was "a sense of relief" but also distress, for Kurt's parents Jacqui and Warren, at the news.

Police are now working to piece events together.

"The vehicle was found by people who were going to ski. It was actually located by a 12-year-old boy," Det Snr Sgt Peachey said at a press conference yesterday.

"He got in the water and felt the number plate and got the rego off it, and then the father Googled it."

"Because we previously released the rego number, it came up saying, 'call the police'."

Det Snr Sgt Peachey said police were "keeping an open mind" about the investigation and "obviously haven't ruled out foul play yet".

"However, we are still treating it as a missing person investigation at the moment," he said. …
