OUR VIOLENT AWAKENING More Action Needed to Combat DVO Breaches; 1 in 2 DV Orders Broken on Fraser Coast, but Will $3.4M Govt Funding Save the Day?

DOMESTIC violence call-outs are increasing on the Fraser Coast - but almost half of all prevention orders are being breached, leaving victims in terror every day.

There were 392 breaches of a domestic violence order reported to police in Hervey Bay and Maryborough in 2015 - more than one a day, and almost half the number of DVO's granted in 12 months.

In Hervey Bay in December alone, police were called to 33 separate breaches of domestic violence protection orders.

More than 900 DV orders were granted in Hervey Bay and Maryborough magistrates' courts in the 2014-2015 financial year.

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said the figures were shocking, adding that the consequences for breaching a DVO needed to get tougher.

Mr Saunders suggested a one-strike system where those who breached a domestic violence order could face a jail sentence.

"We're dealing with people's lives here," he said.

The figures also come after a shocking amount of domestic violence calls were made to Hervey Bay police in one day. …
