RUGBY UNION: Reigning premiers Goondiwindi will begin its Risdon Cup title defence with a home match against Toowoomba Bears as part of the 2016 competition launch.

This season's Downs Rugby premiership gets under way on April 2 when nine teams begin their A-grade battle to win a Risdon Cup grand final berth in September.

Downs Rugby general manager Mitchell Winter said some final touches are still being put on the draw, but the year is set for its post Easter weekend launch.

"We are looking at pushing back the grand final from September 3 to September 10 to avoid a clash with the O'Callaghan Cup," Winter said.

"At this stage we might have to add another general bye round on July 2 which will coincide with Queensland Country and New South Wales Country playing in Toowoomba. …
