AS THE dominant player in Australia's telecommunications network, Telstra is more than a giant money-making machine.

They provide an essential service to millions of Australians and that can be a matter of life and death.

That's quite a responsibility to carry.

As we snowball towards a world consumed by 24/7 communication and engagement, Telstra is both rising to the challenge of meeting demand and also taking advantage of this incredible market opportunity.

But two events in the past week highlight that a company, even with such vast resources, world best practice and superior customer reach, can still be left exposed by human error.

On Tuesday 800,000 Telstra customers lost phone and internet access for hours due to an "embarrassing human error".

I wonder how many lives were put at risk during this window?

To its credit Telstra provided a detailed explanation which showed how a simple mistake can still cause chaos in such a high-tech world. …
