Tropical Lows Bring East Swell

LAST weekend kind of turned out okay for waves, well sort of, a little bit.

Of course the combination of south swell and south wind is always a little underwhelming, as it leaves us with the reality that in the lee of the wind, means in the lee of the swell also.

Or to put it simply, the clean spots are the smaller spots.

This weekend, however, is currently looking a little more promising thanks to a couple of tropical lows positioned to the north and south of Noumea that should swing us a little east swell.

The cyclone watch says there's a moderate (20-50%) chance that one of these lows will go cyclonic by today.

Yet it also says a low chance for tomorrow (less than 20%).

This loosely translates to, even if the storm gets named, it's unlikely to last long.

But that is neither here nor there - the position of the storm is the key.

The one to the north has been feeding into the one further south.

The one to south has been pumping a very long and strong easterly fetch straight into our eastern swell window, and we all know what that means. …
