Six Children Die as School Bus Smashes Head-On into Lorry

SIX children died today when their school bus collided head-on with a rubble truck in western France.

The smash in Rochefort, a port in the Charente-Maritime department, was the second of its kind in as many days.

Yesterday, a 12-year-old boy and a girl aged 15 died when their bus careered off a road in eastern France.

Today, 17 people were aboard the bus when it collided with a lorry carrying rubble near Rochefort's fire station.

Mayor Herve Blanche confirmed the "horrific accident" at 7.15am had claimed the lives of six children and left at least three others seriously injured.

A witness to the aftermath said: "It is a scene of chaos. The vehicles have been smashed to pieces and emergency workers are helping survivors."

The bus had been travelling from the Ile d'Oleron an island off France's Atlantic coast to the town of Surgeres, about 16 miles from Rochefort.

President Francois Hollande extended his "deepest sympathies" to the friends and families of the victims, who have not been identified. …
