Open Data 'Meetups' Starting Tomorrow

A SERIES of 'meetups' on the subject of open data are to be held in the North East, as the region strives to be recognised as a global leader in the field.

Kicking off tomorrow at Campus North in Newcastle, the monthly events are being organised by the Federation of Small Businesses, working in partnership with James Rutherford of Creative Nucleus.

Those attending will hear from individuals and organisations that have already used open data.

Advice will be offered on practical ways of doing so and a drive will be launched for the datasets the community would like to see opened up by councils and others.

The events follow a conference in September 2015, at which the FSB, Dynamo North East and Sunderland Software City launched a campaign for the region to be recognised as a leader in how it uses open data, persuades local authorities to open up more of it and generates business benefits from it.

At the time, it was announced that this would be backed up by a year-long programme of activity that would include the creation of a regional open data portal, hackathons focused on using this data to improve the delivery of services and an open hack night that would span the North East. …
