Gondolas for Byron? A New Survey Is Rating Solutions to Congestion at the Cape

A GONDOLA, a light rail and no vehicle access at all, are some of the options being canvassed for improving access to Cape Byron as the area struggles to cope with over 1.2 million visitors per year.

The local community has been asked to fill out surveys to find out if improved walking tracks, shuttle buses, light rail or gondolas might be a solution to congestion issues at the Cape Byron, NPWS Byron Coast Area Manager Sue Walker said.

"Some options might be seen as pie-in-the-sky by some, however we need consider the widest range of options possible to help ensure the best outcome for protection of the environment and visitor use to this very popular destination," Ms Walker said.

The draft master plan aims to provide guidance for the future operation of the Cape and the estimated 1.2 million visitors annually.

"A key issue is addressing access to the lighthouse where current demand for access is not met on most days," she said. …
