Sex Offenders and Dangerous Drivers Applied to Be Cabbies; One-in-Four Who Sought Taxi Licence Had Criminal Convictions

PAEDOPHILES and dangerous drivers are among those who have applied to be taxi drivers on Teesside, as one in four applications show previous convictions.

Among the previous convictions revealed through the Disclosure and Barring Service for people applying for taxi licences were attempted intercourse with girl under 13 and gross indecency with a girl under 13 in Stockton, as well as attempted sexual intercourse without consent in the same area.

Across Teesside, there were five convictions for indecent assault on women aged 16 and over and four indecent assaults on girls aged under 14.

There were three convictions for kidnapping across Teesside.

In Middlesbrough, there was conviction for causing death by reckless driving and two for causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving, along with a conviction for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving in Stockton.

Across the area, there were 19 previous convictions for dangerous driving. There were one conviction for plying for hire without a Hackney carriage licence in Middlesbrough and four convictions for taxi touting.

Across the local authorities in Teesside, those applying for taxi licences between April 2012 and March 2015 had 236 previous convictions for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, 407 for having no motor insurance, 253 for driving while disqualified, 199 for taking a vehicle without consent, and 92 for driving while over the limit. …
