Ipswich to Reveal New Captain; Another Player Tipped to Return as Jets Prepares for Launch

THE Ipswich Rugby League competition looks like being the big winner off the back of the Jets' incredible 2015 season.

The most talented squad the club has ever assembled will play at North Ipswich Reserve this year.

Aspiring young players have flocked to Ipswich to learn from the game's best young coaches in Ben and Shane Walker.

When the Intrust Super Cup season starts next week, BRL coach Mark Bishop will be spoilt for choice.

Jets players who don't make their teams each week will play in the IRL competition.

IRL coaches jostling to get the best players to strengthen their clubs is something the Jets have been anxious to help with in recent years. That is badly needed locally.

Many of the IRL's best long-term players over the years have come via the Jets pathway so it is great to see that likely to happen again in 2016.

Meanwhile, which former Jet who left at the end of 2015 might be on a plane back to Ipswich and rejoin everything green and white in 2016? Stay tuned.

Season launch

THE Jets' season launch is tonight with the naming of the 2016 captain a highlight.

Premiership winning skipper Keiron Lander's fill-in last season (in five games) was Dane Phillips. He has played 71 matches for the Jets.

Local boy and veteran of 106 games for the Jets Sam Martin is also a favourite.

The Jets have a long history of tough second rowers being captain with Haggath, Coburn and Lander all filling the role with distinction.

Everyone loves a cheeky half too. Phillips is always right in the thick of things on the field.

Ben Walker gave some clues during the week.

"We look for a leader both on and off the field; someone who can handle the game day pressure, external pressure, and more importantly deflect pressure from others,'' he said.

Both candidates would bring something different. …
