TRIPLE world champion Mick Fanning won't compete for a fourth world title in 2016 after announcing he would take time off after a tumultuous year where he endured the loss of his brother, a marriage break-up and a shark attack.

Fanning revealed in a statement on Thursday he would compete in the first two events of the upcoming World Surfing League tour before taking a "personal year" off, with some time away.

However, he stressed he would not be retiring.

"I've been in a title race for the last four years in a row (which) takes a big toll on your mind and your body," Fanning said.

"At this stage, I'm going to compete at Snapper and I'm going to compete at Bells and then I'm going to take some time off from there.

"They (Snapper and Bells) are two events that I love and I'd go crazy if I were sitting at home and couldn't surf Snapper.

"Bells is like a second home as well. …
