Rich Pickings in Lean Season

Article excerpt

BRISBANE trainer Les Ross says he has, by his own standards, had a lean season, even if his stable has so far won more than half a million dollars prizemoney.

On Tuesday Ross will come south to Lismore with four horses, his first trip to the track in more than a year, in a bid to increase his strike rate.

"I haven't had a lot of winners but I have had a lot of placegetters and prize- money is what counts so I guess it hasn't been a bad season so far," Ross said.

"A few more winners would be handy, though, and hopefully we can get one or two at Lismore.

"I took a few to Ballina recently and had no luck there but there are some nice races at Lismore for these horses.

"We have 25 babies at home I have had to educate and that has taken a lot of my time but there are some nice horses amongst them.

"Hopefully next season we will reap the rewards."

Ross will start Mishani Scout (in the Winning Post Function Centre Maiden), Mishani De Nero (Woodlawn Cup 7 May Benchmark 60), Mishani Pheonix (Lismore Workers Club Benchmark 54) and Gina Ballerina (Vale Shanelle Bull Class 1).

Andrew Spinks will ride the first three with Jason Taylor going on to Gina Ballerina and interestingly Ross says she is his best chance.

"She has been racing consistently and has been placed at her past three starts," Ross said.

"I have her at the Brisbane stable while the other three are on the farm at Beaudesert.

"She is not up to city class but I do think she is up to winning some nice country races.

"They are going to get even nicer when your prizemoney goes up, and you will see more of me and my horses down your way.

"It's a bit scary knowing that our prizemoney will be going down shortly."

Gina Ballerina has been placed at Beaudesert and Ipswich and came off a five-week break to run third at Gatton earlier this month. …
