Green Tea Extract Still Popular

MOST people probably hadn't heard of green tea extract until a few weeks ago when a Western Australian man was given two weeks to live and needed an emergency liver transplant after taking a protein powder containing green tea extract.

And although the Therapeutic Goods Administration is looking to clamp down on suspect herbal products, sporting supplement stores in Gladstone are still stocking the stuff and say if you follow the simple directions you shouldn't run into trouble.

Sarah Lowe from Aussie Supplements in Gladstone said most people who came into her shop were after protein powders and vitamins but fat burners like green tea extract kept the till ticking over.

"The green tea extract is still popular and is commonly found in fat burners," she said. "We haven't had anyone come back in about it. The thing is we don't know anything about the guy's medical history and if he's followed the directions then he wouldn't be overdosing. …
