Council Signing Up for PS1.5bn Devolution Deal

CITY councillors have given the green light to a historic PS1.5bn devolution deal.

Newcastle City Council have agreed to pursue the creation of a North East Combined Authority - similar to that in Manchester and Liverpool. The proposal, which still needs to be agreed by six other North East councils, could see the region get new powers covering employment and skills, transport and planning and business activity.

Outlining the importance of the deal council leader Nick Forbes said that it was the first step on a journey that could eventually see a North East elected assembly created.

Coun Forbes said: "It is absolutely crucial that we have more decisions that affect the North East being taken in the North East. The devolution agreement takes us further towards our goal of greater social justice for the region.

"It enables us, for example, to regulate buses, to let elected members set bus fares, it enables us to match skills funding with the requirements of our employers. …
