TIME OUT OF MIND Cert 15, 116 mins THIS US indie drama stands out from the crowd thanks to a beautiful performance from Richard Gere and cinematography that captures the fractured perception of a traumatised drunk, who drifts like tumbleweed through the streets of New York. George (Gere) lacks a fixed abode, but Time Out of Mind isn't a modern-day Cathy Come Home. Even with a roof over his head, our hero would be in hell; he's almost literally beyond help. His moments of clarity punctuate the film. Every time a woman shows a speck of kindness towards him, he leans forward with the weary diligence of a magician about to dazzle children with a card trick.

The film's one sex scene (involving an unrecognisable Kyra Sedgwick) is marvellously restrained. That said, scenes between George and his adult daughter ( Jena Malone) are a tad soapy. If director Oren Moverman wants to be the next Cassavetes he's still got a way to go.

HITCHCOCK / TRUFFAUT Cert 12A, 80 mins IF YOU love the ground-breaking 1966 book (in which Truffaut discusses every single Hitchcock movie with his hero in a way that's both philosophical and pithy) then your heart is unlikely to be sent skipping by Kent Jones's documentary. The "new" stuff mostly involves gushy directors pointing out the obvious re Hitch. Some of these figures are downright pretentious (yes, Arnaud Desplechin, I mean you). Still, it's nice to see the early letters Alfred and Francois sent across the Atlantic (many of which were in French, an indication of how evenly balanced their relationship would prove to be). Hearing their voices has charm too. Talking about sex, the English director sounds gauche and eager to impress. In fact, as he discusses an "erection" experienced by Vertigo's Scottie Ferguson, you'd think he was the novice and Truffaut the old pro. …
