Pub Chain Has a Taste for Expansion in the Region

JD Wetherspoon could soon open a new pub in Thornaby - and wants to add more to its list of Teesside venues.

The chain, which is known for bringing unused and historic buildings back into use, is on the look-out for "good sites in towns and city centres" following the success of existing pubs on Teesside.

Wetherspoon's Eddie Gershon said: "We've identified sites we really like in Thornaby, Newton Aycliffe and other areas, which are still subject to agreeing a deal.

"Negotiations are ongoing, but they haven't quite got over the line yet.

"Our pubs in Middlesbrough and Redcar have all done very well and we're still looking to add more.

"We're searching for good sites in towns and city centres or secondary towns, to develop into our style of pub - rather than taking over existing pubs.

"We've had pubs in the North-east for more than 20 years now. We take on old buildings then convert them, subject to planning and licensing. …
