SURVIVING an earthquake is enough to leave anyone rattled and anxious to leave.

For Western Pride striker Geoff Macintyre, it was so scary, he moved to Australia.

The New Zealand born and bred footballer was luckily away from his flat in Christchurch when one of the city's notorious quakes hit. His flat in the middle of the city was seriously damaged.

"If I was there, I probably would have been hurt,'' he said.

"It was one of those things that you don't really want to experience.''

Macintyre and his partner Kate decided it was time to find a less threatening environment so they relocated to the Gold Coast.

Preparing for tonight's match against Far North Queensland at Flinders View, Macintyre said one of the big differences in Queensland was playing a lot of night football.

In New Zealand, he regularly played during daylight hours.

"The weather is a lot warmer,'' he said. "I'm not really used to playing the night games.''

However, New Zealand's loss is Pride's gain with the former Kiwi under-17 World Cup player joining this year's National Premier Leagues squad.

"I'm really enjoying it,'' said Macintyre, who turned 26 last month.

Having Australian citizenship, Macintyre was keen to make south east Queensland home.

"I think it was about a different lifestyle,'' he said, settling on the Gold Coast in 2014.

"After the earthquake, we decided that there wasn't really a hell of a lot keeping us there.

"And when the opportunity came to play in Ipswich, we jumped at it. …
