Article excerpt

BUOYANT Northumbria University Student Sport President Brogan O'Connor hailed the 'best week of her life' as she reflected on an historic third Stan Calvert Cup win on the bounce.

The holders fought off a spirited challenge from rivals Newcastle University during what was one of the closest ever varsity competitions.

O'Connor admitted those close to the Northumbria camp feared Stan Calvert 2016 would go down to the wire after pre-Sunday predictions indicated a narrow loss.

Confirmation of a 73.75-67.25 victory sparked wild scenes at Gateshead Stadiumt.

O'Connor admitted: "We are all ecstatic.

People forget this but we did our predictions and it looked like we might lose by a point.

"To come out with the win - our third in a row - is brilliant.

"We knew what we had to do. We had to win as many games as possible and it has been a difficult week.

"However, we have came through it and our hard work paid off in the end - it has probably been the best week of my life.

"Credit to all of the athletes and volunteers from both Northumbria and Newcastle who made this happen.

"It is not just a week-long thing. It is a season-long thing and we have been working towards this since the teams were picked in September. It is the pinnacle of the season for everyone.

"While winning the cup may not mean much for BUCS it is worth everything in terms of local pride and I am buzzing to have been part of it."

Northumbria took a 14-point lead into Super Sunday but Newcastle slowly clawed back the deficit during a day of heated competition.

The holders won the men's firsts fencing against all odds to keep their rivals at bay.

Netball turned around a two-game losing streak to take the points in the matches between the firsts and seconds.

However, Northumbria tennis failed to complete their Stan Calvert clean sweep as the men's seconds went down 8-4. There was better news in the men's table tennis firsts match as Dave Godbold's squad eased past Newcastle.

The women's hockey firsts and men's squash firsts both picked up brilliant wins to lay the foundation for yet another Stan Calvert win for Northumbria. …
