YAROB Haddad, chairman of Coffs City Council's Multicultural Reference Group, is looking forward to the Multicultural Harmony Festival this weekend.

Mr Haddad arrived in Australia with his wife and two daughters in 2005, having left their homeland of Syria as refugees.

He is grateful for the secure and safe life that Australia has given them.

"Through events like Coffs Harbour's Multicultural Harmony Festival, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it; from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world," Mr Haddad said.

"We became Australian citizens in 2007 and now my wife and I are working and learning new skills and my daughters are both doing very well at school.

"Through my role on the Multicultural Reference Group I am looking to give back to the community that has given my family so much."

Mr Haddad originally joined the council's Multicultural Reference Group to learn how a council committee operates and to be part of developing community initiatives and programs. …
