SUNSHINE Coast voters go to the polls this weekend with promises from all candidates they support "balanced" development.

It's a term that has many meanings dependent on definition.

In Noosa, where the election will be very much about the style of local government during what is a term hoped to bring stability after a decade-long fight for self-determination, there is no confusion. Balanced development ensures new construction respects a carefully-crafted town plan whose goal is to protect environmental and lifestyle values because of the social and economic benefits they underpin.

In a field of 13 councillor and three mayoral candidates not one has argued for a radical shift in direction to pursue a population-based economic growth model in the next iteration of the Noosa Plan due this term.

Any changes will be around new definitions for what comprises an industrial zone and to allow start ups and IT hubs space to thrive. The Noosa election has been all about the economy, how to stimulate economic activity and where new jobs will be found.

The aspirations of the Noosa Council are very much those of the majority of residents who will vote at the Sunshine Coast Council elections.

It is difficult to argue however any unanimity among candidates about how they will be satisfied.

The great Sekisui House debate revealed a willingness by the last council to consider development that was not only totally out of kilter with both the expectations of the community but also at odds with a newly-minted planning scheme. Regardless of how the handling of the matter has since been justified, in Noosa the developer would have received a short and unsympathetic dismissal. Instead there were 12 meetings before the public even became aware of the existence of a project for which a development application was never made. …
