YOU can check out the new Hardie Artificial Reef and popular local fishing spots on the annual familiarisation cruise of Hervey Bay and the Sandy Strait on March 20.

At 8.30am the MV Amaroo boat will leave the Hervey Bay Boat Club, Urangan Harbour and cruise to popular fishing spots including the new Hardie Artificial Reef near Little Woody Island, the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef, the Picnic Islands and Fraser Island.

GPS readings will be given at each spot and also all the marks for the Hardie Reef and the new Simpson Reef at the Outer Banks North of Pelican Bank.

Green and yellow zones will also be pointed out including the green zone north of Big Woody Island which is now marked with permanent buoys and the green zone east of Little Woody Island.

Representatives of Hervey Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue will tell you all about their organisation, the correct use of radios and tips on how to navigate the area.

Brochures on the latest regulations on fish species, size, bag limits and fish identification will be given out. …
