Voters Rush the Council Poll Today; Big Early Vote as Pre-Poll Count Hits 20% Barrier

AS GYMPIE region's three mayoral candidates reaffirmed their key issues ahead of today's council election, it was expected close to 20% of the region would have already cast their vote by last night.

Mayor Mick Curran has held office for 12 months since the extremely close mayoral by-election following the death of former mayor Ron Dyne last year.

The biggest threat to Cr Curran, Ian Petersen, has taken himself out of the race by announcing his retirement from local government.

Candidate George Groth has centred his campaign on rates.

He has called for the removal of a range of levies.

"Tip levies? Infrastructure levy? Spending needs to stop," he told The Gympie Times.

Mr Groth said council must run more efficiently.

"It's time this council got a bit of a shake-up, it's time this council was run like a business," he said.

Hydrotherapy group advocate Derek Hume said local council needed to listen to voters. …
