Boom-Times Rent Begin to Bite Retailers

NEIGHBOURS are supposed to look out for one another.

Well for Deb Lebsanft, that is the case.

The Dezire Intimates manager is concerned that her fellow stores might not make it to next year with high rents and tenancies arranged during Mackay's economic peak.

She feared that if shops inside shopping centres continued to close, larger retailers would be what followed.

Ms Lebsanft moved into "fair rent" at Caneland Central 15 months ago and said she's watched long-term businesses currently set up "struggle" to keep afloat.

Ms Lebsanft was disheartened to discover that another business was set to close its doors later this year.

"There are plenty of businesses out there who have been roped into seven to 10-year leases," she said.

"It's frustrating because legally we have to submit our figures to shopping centres and they can see that we're hurting.

"It pains me to know the shops around me are struggling."

Prior to Caneland Central, Dezire Intimates was based at the Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre. …
