DESPERATE times call for desperate measures, or so the saying goes.

And All Blacks were pretty desperate on Saturday against a rampant Rovers outfit in the second round of the Premier League.

With eight players from last year's grand final side unavailable All Blacks president picked up his hockey stick.

The 52-year-old still plays hockey but admitted he was not in prime condition.

"I'm 53 this year but I had to play," he said.

"I'm paying for it today I can tell you."

The club issued a call to arms for the match knowing that it needed players for the game.

Four players remain suspended from last year and another four have not returned to the club this year.

With only 10 players available, All Blacks struggled to match Rovers' intensity, with the searing heat eventually taking its toll as the team went down 7-2. …
