Crack Closes Four Cummer Galleries; Musuem Will Also Take Time to Renovate Space While Performing Repair

As visitors to the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens undoubtedly noticed in recent weeks, the south wing of the museum currently is closed due to a crack in the building's slab.

A notice on cummermuseum.org reports: "South wing galleries are currently closed for the repair, renovation and reinstallation of the collection."

The immediate cause of the temporary closure is a crack in a slab in the Lane Gallery. The crack, which is not in building's foundation, occurred March 3 during repair work under the building. That led the museum to close the Lane Gallery and three smaller adjoining galleries and to remove the art.

"The slab was broken," said Hope McMath, the Cummer's director. "Because of that and wanting to make sure the art was safe, we needed to remove the art from those spaces."

Most of the art from the Lane Gallery, which features 20th century American work, has been moved to the Jacobsen Gallery where it is on display with other 20th century works. …
