AUSTRALIAN squash No2 Ryan Cuskelly produced one of the best performances of his career when he came close to defeating three-time world champion Ramy Ashour.

The former Evans Head player went down in a dramatic encounter 11-5 11-9 6-11 9-11 13-11 in the second round of the World Series tournament in Hull, England.

Ashour, who won the event in 2013, had gone two games up only to see his lead shattered by a resurgent Cuskelly, who refocused after an injury forced him off court for a short period in the third, before going 9-3 up in the deciding fifth game.

In a remarkable display of tenacity and skill, the Egyptian battled back, overturning a match ball for Cuskelly at 11-10 before sealing a close win after 1 hour 46 minutes on court.

"We train together sometimes, so I know how hard it is to beat him, even when he is not at 100%," Cuskelly said. …
