TODAY will be the moment of truth for Greg Howells trained Goornong Girl as it takes to the track for the first race in Grafton in the Pinwheel Benchmark 60 Handicap.

Goornong Girl was named after the Victorian suburb where she was bred, and caught the eye of Howells, who decided to buy it and bring it up to Grafton.

"I was looking for a horse, and the form was good and the price was right, so it suited me," he said.

Goornong Girl was previously in the stables of leading country trainer Ballarat-based trainer Darren Weir.

Howells has trained the five-year-old mare in his stable since Christmas, and expects a tough race.

"It's a bit hard to line-up the form, but on paper it looks like a reasonable race," he said.

"She has been going alright since I've brought her up, so I hope she races well. …
