THE road adjacent to Lake Ainsworth's eastern bank in Lennox Head will be back in the spotlight this Saturday when the group campaigning to keep it open holds a muster day.

Ballina Shire Council, as mangers of the Crown Land the road is on, has already decided to close the road to protect the freshwater lake, which has had outbreaks of blue-green algae over the years, and that could happen as early as May.

That decision has been supported by the Lennox Head Residents' Association and Lennox Head Landcare.

The theory is the road and associated road base is compacting the sand, not allowing the natural underground flow of water from the lake to the beach.

A spokesman for the Stop the Road Closure Committee, Pip Carter, said the group also wants to protect the treasured lake, but questioned whether the road was impacting on the flow of water.

He cites the council's own reports which show increases and decreases in the water level of the lake. …
