A PUBLIC memorial service is planned for Teesside magic man Paul Daniels.

The South Bank-born entertainer's widow, Debbie McGee, says a private funeral ceremony for close friends and family will be held near the couple's Berkshire home. But she has also con-firmed a public memorial will be held for Paul, who died on March 17, aged 77, after being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour.

Debbie told a national newspaper she has given the undertaker a solid silver wand to be placed on top of Paul's coffin.

And reflecting the upbeat way he led his life, the music will include Sammy Davis Jr's Mr Bojangles and Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah - a song Paul told people to sing when they were sad.

Debbie, 57, has also used her weekly BBC Radio Berkshire show to thank fans for their touching messages and letters of support following Paul's death.

She also recalled a letter she received on Thursday from a man who described watching the Paul Daniels Magic Show as "the only happy memory" from his childhood. …
