Rob's the Shining Light and Deserves Praise

I CANNOT express to you how pleased I am for Rob Elliot - he has been the shining light of Newcastle United's grim season.

To have risen from the position as third-choice goalkeeper at the start of the campaign to the Magpies' most-consistent performer, now that really is something to be applauded.

It is incredibly difficult, whether you area keeper or an outfield player, to be sat twiddling your thumbs waiting for a chance - and it is even harder to then grasp a rare opportunity you might get with both hands. He has quite literally done that this season.

Week after week the 29-year-old has been called upon to make saves, and just about every time he has stood up and been counted.

Take the Sunderland game for example, I just do not think he has received the plaudits he deserved for that wonderful point-blank stop from Patrick van Aanholt's rocket from inside the area with the scoreline still at 1-0. …
